The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was the ultimate heavy bomber of World War II. Beginning in the spring of 1944, the B-29 was bombing targets in China and the Pacific. In total, five bomb wings were equipped with the B-29; the most famous was the 509th Composite Group—the atomic bombers.

A Japanese Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu “Nick” twin-engine fighter plunges through a formation of B-29s from the 6th Bomb Squadron, 29th Bomb Group. The top B-29 has been damaged and is beginning to break formation.

The B-29’s General Electric remote computer-aided turret gun system was the most advanced of the war. For gunners, this sophisticated aiming system was capable of automatically correcting for range, altitude, airspeed, and temperature. This photo shows the rear ventral turret.
